happy birthday to ya!

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Pretty much all of my life, my birthday has fallen on December 22nd. It's not the date I would have chosen – in fact, it's not the date I was supposed to show up on this planet (I was six weeks early). But it's my date, and there is a lot of positive spin to it. As Mrs. G points out, in her inimitable optimism, it's the first day of spring! Well, in the sense that the days are now getting longer again, having turned the solstice corner.

It's also a day that is close enough to the end of the year that it inspires reflection. What has the year that is about to wrap out brought in terms of blessings, lessons, friendships, opportunities, dreams, challenges? What are my plans and goals for the new year ahead? These are the thoughts that will occupy me in these waning days of 2010, which will happily be filled with the love and friendship of those most near and dear to me.

The holidays can be joyful, or painful, and I have experienced both extremes. But this year I am filled with joy and gratitude. No need to enumerate all the blessings; I savor each one in the deepest part of my being. I thank you all for helping me find a voice and a place for this blog, and I truly relish the communication it inspires.

On my Facebook page, a friend posted a link to a wonderful Paul McCartney performance of the Beatles' Birthday song. She could not have known that for many, many years it was my tradition to put the White Album on the stereo, place the needle on the Birthday track, and crank it up. I always kicked off the day with a big dose of classic Beatles rock 'n' roll. And once again, the song has played me into the happiest of moods. Yes we're going to a party party!

Happy Birthday, Paul!

If I'd have known I'd have sent you 100 points. Meaningless without an accompanying description, but it's the thought that counts.

And Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Kwanzaa, and Adios Amigo.

A belated HBDPG!

I thought I was the only one. Ask my kids what they associate with birthdays and they'll invariably reply, "Na-na-na-na-NA-nah, you say it's your BIRTHDAY!..." Think I wore out that track on the vinyl. Our family's BD tradition for forty years. :-)
