new washington wine book

This weekend I received the hardcover copy of my new book. It's the second edition – extensively revised and completely updated – of “Washington Wines & Wineries: the Essential Guide.” It has arrived at the publisher’s warehouse and will begin shipping this week.

Though it has only been three years since the previous edition, it seems more like a decade. Despite all the doom and gloomers, growth in the Washington wine industry has continued at a record pace. Yes, there are some wineries for sale, some cancelled vineyard contracts, and some projects on hold. That is nothing new. I recently reviewed a manuscript that delved into the history of California grape growing and winemaking in the mid-to-late 1800s, and there were the same boom and bust cycles then, some caused by financial meltdowns, some by disease, some by accidents of nature. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Nonetheless, the impression I get from regular meetings with winemakers and vineyard owners is that the work of growing great grapes and crafting excellent wines goes on as before, and expectations for future growth and success remain quite high. This book, I believe, captures that optimism. A couple of online reviews of the book have already appeared, based on paperback page proof copies. Here are the links:

I have completely re-written and revised this book, although it has much the same format, layout and organization as the previous edition. This one took more time and effort to write, not less. I eliminated two complete chapters that were no longer relevant, doubled the number of winery entries, doubled the number of vineyard profiles, added dozens and dozens of wine recommendations under the “Grapes” section, dropped the numerical rating system, and made a sincere effort to retain a critical perspective that will help you to find the wines and wineries that you will most enjoy. Of course, there will be criticisms (bring ‘em!) and that’s all part of the process. As I wrote to one blogger critic already, no book is ever perfect, and any author worth his or her salt will agree that their work can be improved. I did the best I can do, and that will have to suffice for today.

Congratulations Paul! The 2007 version has been a great reference for me. Can't wait to pick up a copy of the new edition!
